While students use a variety of strategies some are more efficient than others. (Cobb & Merkel, 1989)
Parents are probably the most significant teacher a child will have. The influence a parent can have on a childs understanding of mathematics is quite profound.
Most parents teach their children to count before they go to school, which is a good start, but do you also teach your child to count backwards. Backwards counting is the first step to understanding subtraction. Simple things like counting down the number of sleeps till Christmas or a birthday can help a child to count backwards.
Parents use an amazing amount of numeracy in their everyday lives, this is important stuf and should be passed onto your child. Things like setting the table contribute to an understanding of mathematics, placing cutlery in the correct position actually addresses one of the curriculum outcames: Space and Geometry Early Stage 1 outcome 1.3.
Numeracy is an individual's practical approach to mathematics and although these approaches may differ they are all mathematics and are all valuable, so share them with your child.
